18227-01 - Vorlesung: Advanced Financial Management (Maag) (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2007
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Dahiya Sandeep (DAHIYA.SANDEEP@UNIBAS.CH, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The course focuses on the application of corporate finance tools to help make real life decisions. While the traditional approach of classroom lectures, homework assignments and exams will be employed to achieve the primary goal of ensuring that you acquire core knowledge of Corporate Finance issues, the course uses business case studies extensively to motivate discussion of how the knowledge of specific techniques (e.g. NPV analysis) is useful in making business decisions (e.g. what business to invest in).
Lernziele A key challenge faced by all Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) is how to make their business as valuable as possible. The value creation imperative is driven by two major decisions - the investment decision, and the financing decision.1 How these decisions can affect firm value is illustrated by real life examples.
The primary goal of this course is to provide you with a good grasp of the substantive issues of Corporate Finance that have a bearing on these decisions. The course provides theoretical and empirical evidence to show that of the two major decisions, it is the
investment decision which has the most impact on the value of a firm. Thus, we shall spend considerably more time on understanding how to make good investment decisions. However in real life the financing decision can also have significant value implications.
The second major goal of this course is to develop your critical thinking and problemsolving skills. The primary tool to achieve this goal is the use of The Case-Method. This method involves assigning cases (real-life situations faced by a decision maker) to you
for which you are expected to use your knowledge (from class lectures, assigned readings, etc.) to make decisions. This method is designed to help you relate the subject knowledge you acquire to case problems and to communicate it effectively (e.g. by recognizing how different ideas are related, how to build upon the comments of other students, relate their comment to discussion, etc.). You are expected to come to class prepared to defend your decisions and to discuss your analyses that support your decisions.
