Inhalt | This lecture is an introduction to the ecology and biogeography of Africa. It provides basic information on the main ecoregions such as the zonal desert, savanna or rain forest and the extra-zonal mangrove or mountain ecosystems as well as freshwater ecosystems. Their structure and function is a result of both the current environmental conditions and their dynamics in space and time. The lecture informs on the main ecological factors, vegetation and fauna, and land use and human impact on the environment. Contents 1. Introduction Structure Bibliog raphy 2. Climate, Geology, and Geomorphology 3. Major Ecoregions (Distribution, Structure, Function, Dynamics; Soil, Vegetation, Fauna, Land Use; Human Impact, Major Threats) 4.1. Desert Ecoregions (Abiotic Characteristics and Habitats, Adaptation of Biota, Envi-ronmental History) 4.2. Savanna Ecoregions (Soils of the seasonal tropics; (Im)balance between Grass and Woody Vegetation; Fire: Pattern and Impact; Large Herbivores, Isoberlinia dominated Savannas, Miombo, Mopane, Inselbergs) 4.3. Rainforest Ecoregions (West African Domaine, The Dahomey Gap, Congo Basin Domaine, East African Domaine, Isolated rainforests: Victoria Falls, East African Coastal Rainforests, Canopy Arthropods, Causes of High Organismic Diversity) 4.4. Mountain Ecoregions (Distribution, Altitudinal belts, Adaptation and Endemism) 4.5. Mangrove Ecoregions (Distribution, Structure, Ecological Importance) 4.6. Southern African Ecoregions (Overview, Kalahari Fine-leaved Savanna, Namib De-sert, Succulent Karoo, Nama-Karoo, Grassland, Fynbos, Forest: Knysna) 5. African Limnology (Rivers, East African Lakes: Geological History, East African Lakes: Evolution and Distribution of the Aquatic Fauna, Artificial Reservoirs) 7. Human Impact 7.1. Desertification 7.2. The Role of Plantation Forests 7.3. Control of Disease Vectors and Pests: Environmental Problems (Schistosomosis, Onchocercosis, Trypanosomosis, Pest Birds, Locusts, Aquatic Weeds) 8. Conservation of Biodiversity |
