Inhalt | When we browse through the library bookshelves, we find "dictionaries" in one section and "grammars" in another. Yet lexicon and grammar are much less independent than this "division of labour" in our publishing tradition seems to suggest. All current linguistic theories assume a close relationship between the lexico-semantic aspects of language and the formal structures in syntax and morphology, but they differ widely in how they conceive of this relationship. We will discuss several papers that elaborate the notion of "verb valency" that predicts that the verb semantics opens up a number of syntactic positions that need to be filled, and then move on to Construction Grammar which sees all linguistic surface patterns. Finally we will discuss idioms and phraseologisms where the form and meaning side seem to be frozen. Throughout the course we will discuss the implications of these different approaches for dictionary and grammar writing, and do some corpus analyses to find out more about selected structures. To gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between linguistic theory and empirical work. Students are encouraged to attend to my lecture "Sprachwissenschaftliche Theoriebildung im 20. Jahrhundert" (21406-01, Thursday 2-4 pm). |
Lernziele | Students gain an understanding of modern linguistic theory formation with a strong focus on the interdependence of theory formation and its empirical validation. |
