| Inhalt | An intense reading of major works emerging after the Civil War (1860-1865), and the aftermath of a victory that legally put an end to the peculiar institution of slavery in the Deep South. Yet, myths of aristocratic chivalry, southern belles, sentiment and romance still abound in the so-called plantation novel. These myths concur with rural backwardness, carpetbagging, poor white trash-issues and fears of miscegenation (the infamous one-drop-rule of black blood), lynching, and the Ku Klux Klan. |
| Lernziele | This seminar seeks to examine the grotesque, the comic and the tragic circumstances of race-class-gender identity politics in the Deep South, topics that reach deeply beyond the regional. |
