23161-01 - Proseminar: The Cityscape and Contemporary African Art (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2009
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Fiona Siegenthaler (fiona.siegenthaler@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Contemporary African art and its global presence - as in most parts of the world - is directly linked to urbanization. For many artists, the city is the place to be, the site of inspiration, the economic source and the nod of an informational and institutional network which reaches far beyond the country borders.
In order to understand the influence of African art history as well as the urban context on today's art production, we will draw a closer look at the most important art centres which have evolved since the 60s, but also on the crucial aspects of urbanization in Africa. This will serve us as a basis to look at different recent strategies, media and topics used by selected contemporary artists: How do they perceive their or an other African city? How is it represented and interpreted in their work? What is their very role and aim within this cityscape and under what conditions do they work?
This local perspective, finally, will be broadened to an internationally oriented view, considering questions about global economic and institutional power relations. Not only the art, but increasingly also the artists become mobile; some of them make their living as jetsetters or are based in the Diaspora. They are part of a global network in which "the African city" often remains an important reference.
