14630-01 - Vorlesung: Theory and Practice in Integrative Pest Management (2 KP)

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2010
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Ralf Peveling (ralf.peveling@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Biological pest management (BPM) has long been considered as a soft yet ineffective alternative to chemical control. Nowadays, BPM has not only emerged from its former niche markets but has become a key component of both organic and integrated farming systems. The present course will review the history of biological control – or biocontrol – and integrated pest management (IPM). Starting with examples of classical biocontrol (i.e., control of exotic pests by introducing natural antagonists), the course gives an overview of
successes and failures of BPM and IPM and presents modern biocontrol approaches both in theory and practice. The course will particularly address African and Central Asian pest management problems and solutions, as well as implications for regional and global value chains in the fruit and vegetable market. Visits to users and producers of biocontrol agents are also foreseen.
