| Inhalt | In the last decades an enormous number of illness narratives have been written and published, and scholars in literary and cultural studies have begun to discuss and theorize this genre. Personal narratives about illness not only raise complex questions about notions of selfhood, they equally provide insight into the cultural and social constructions of illness. Besides reading a whole range of illness narratives, we will also discuss canonical texts on literary representations of illness such as Susan Sontag's "Illness as Metaphor and Aids and Its Metaphors" and Virginia Woolf's essay "On Being Ill". |
| Lernziele | This course will introduce students to a selection of different illness narratives (on AIDS, cancer, autoimmune disease, and stroke) and to the current debates on this genre. |
