Semester Frühjahrsemester 2010
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Werner Brönnimann (werner.broennimann@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)

Inhalt William Shakespeare's tragedy of "King Lear" has not only been continously performed on the modern stage, it has also been rewritten and transmuted many times, in some cases it has even been translated into other media. This course will focus on some of these later versions, all of them works of art in their own right, including Nahum Tate's optimistic version (1689), a novella by Turgeniev (1870), Edward Bond's radical play simply entitled "Lear" (1971), Aribert Reimann's "Lear" opera (1978), Peter Yates's film "The Dresser" (with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay; 1983), David Hare's play "The Secret Rapture" (1988) and Jane Smiley's epic novel "A Thousand Acres", which sets "King Lear" in rural Iowa (1991).
Lernziele The seminar will offer a practical as well as a theoretical introduction to literary reception in different media. More generally, it will be one of the aims of this course to demonstrate the protean potential of cultural artefacts, their ability to change their shape while continuing to tease and to stir our imagination.
Literatur Texts to be purchased:
