Semester Herbstsemester 2010
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Elisio Macamo (elisio.macamo@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This seminar introduces students to the sociology of technology in general and brings its insights to bear on the study of society in Africa. The seminar aims at encouraging students to regard technological artefacts in Africa as constitutive of everyday life practices in ways that are relevant to an understanding of the phenomena of order, stability, change and conflict. The course will start by reviewing major lines of thought and inquiry in the sociological study of technology and will identify themes to be looked at in more detail against the background of the structure of African societies today. It will go on to impress upon participating students the need to see technological artefacts and the way individuals cope with them in African settings as important sources of insight into the nature of social relationships and the structure of everyday life on the continent.
