74405-01 - Seminar: Digital Papyrology: Finding, Understanding, Using and Producing Digital Data on Ancient Greek Papyri (3 CP)

Content This course will be a block webinar in collaboration with Sorbonne université (Prof. Laudenbach) and Mannitoba University Canada (Prof. Sampson). After an introduction on Digital Papyrology, it will focus on a selection of papyri bearing the text of Homer’s Iliad whose contents are not yet digitized. The course will show all the steps that lead to their availability on papyri.info and will be an opportunity to reflect upon the process of digitization (goals, choices, limitations…). Participants will be assigned short passages to encode. Interested participants should not hesitate to contact the Professor for any question.

Learning objectives Understanding the impact of the digital age upon Classics and one of its specialized domains (papyrology).
In particular, understanding how the tools that are available (especially papyri.info) work, what is at stake when a piece of Literature on papyrus is "digitized".
Learn some basics in the encoding of texts (Leiden + as an easy step for TEI XML) and metadata.
Bibliography Bibliography will be provided during the first session.

 

Admission requirements No prior knowledge of encoding languages is required but a minimum level of Greek is needed (Graecum or near to its completion).
