| Content | This course explores the crucial role of communication in shaping healthcare outcomes, emphasizing that success in healthcare depends not only on accurate diagnoses and effective treatments but also significantly on the quality of interactions through which these processes occur. Focusing on the structure dynamics of health interactions – particularly, between health professionals and patients or their families – this course adopts a linguistic-interactional perspective to examine communication across diverse healthcare settings, including doctor-patient consultations, diagnostic exams, doctor-family interactions in intensive care, and calls to health information centers. The course will cover three key areas: (i) The structure, nature, and dynamics of medical consultations. (ii) The role of expertise and power in shaping healthcare interactions. (iii) How broader social issues – such as gender, power, and the life world vs. biomedical knowledge – emerge and are materialized in social interactions, and implications to patient-centered care and health inequalities. |
| Bibliography | The course readings (in English) will rely on classic and recent research literature and recorded materials (originally in Brazilian Portuguese with translations in English) which capture the empirical reality approached in the readings. |
