55048-01 - Lecture: The AI Economy: Business Strategies and Policy Issues (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Stephen Weymouth (stephen.weymouth@unibas.ch)
Content The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming business strategies, reshaping economies, and igniting new social and political debates. This course examines the powerful role of AI in revolutionizing industries, exploring how firms are using AI-driven strategies to restructure operations, create value, and outpace competitors. Through case studies and hands-on group projects, we will analyze real-world competitive strategies using AI. We’ll also investigate how AI impacts society at large, tackling complex issues such as job displacement, privacy, misinformation, and the future of global cooperation. Students will actively engage in debates about the trade-offs of emerging business models, and evaluate AI regulation in key regions like the US, Europe, and China. By the end of the course, students will have the chance to propose solutions to pressing policy challenges in a collaborative, interactive setting. This course is designed for students eager to understand not just the mechanics of AI-powered business, but also the broader implications for society and global governance. If you’re looking to engage deeply with the future of technology and its influence on the world, this course offers an essential toolkit.
