76649-01 - Practical course: Usage-Based Approaches to Language and Language Acquisition (1 CP)

Semester fall semester 2025
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Mirjam Weder (mirjam.weder@unibas.ch)
Content The "Übung"/exercise focuses on usage-based approaches to first and second language acquisition as they have developed over the last three decades. They have not only changed our view of first and second language acquisition, further language development and multilingualism, but also our view of the cognitive underpinnings of language in general. Usage-based approaches combine different perspectives and disciplines, but have in common a focus on authentic language use and authentic language experience.
In a one-day meeting, we explore theoretical and empirical perspectives. Students will read compulsory key texts as preparation and are expected to attend the conference “Language and language acquisition through a Usage-based lens” on 31 October 2025 (not 19 September, as displayed early in the semester) at the University of Basel (morning and afternoon).

Learning objectives Internationally renown scholars will present cutting-edge work so that the students will get an insight into current trends in this research field and can critically reflect on it.
Bibliography Reading material will be provided at the beginning of term in ADAM.
Comments The event/course will take place in room 120, Kollegienhaus, on October 31.
