| Semester | spring semester 2026 |
| Course frequency | Every spring sem. |
| Lecturers | Diana Santelia (diana.santelia@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
| Content | This course provides a comprehensive overview of the molecular, genetic, and computational tools used to improve plant agronomic traits, from domestication to modern genome engineering. It covers conventional breeding and genetic engineering approaches, including classical selection, genomics-based methods, Agrobacterium tumefaciens–mediated transformation, RNA interference (RNAi), and genome editing, with emphasis on CRISPR–Cas systems. The course includes guided journal club sessions and a bioinformatics workshop on gene cloning, and addresses regulatory, political, and societal aspects of plant biotechnology. |
| Learning objectives | By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1) Explain the molecular and genetic principles underlying conventional breeding and genetic engineering approaches used in plants. 2) Compare conventional breeding, genetic engineering, and genome editing with respect to their mechanisms, outcomes, and limitations. 3) Critically evaluate primary scientific literature in plant biotechnology and communicate scientific arguments during guided journal club discussions. 4) Perform and interpret basic bioinformatics analyses related to gene cloning. |
