| Content | In this course, we will focus on the century of Palestine's social history before the Nakba of 1948. We will actively avoid the pitfall of seeing that period as annunciatory of the events to come and will rather focus on the many transformations occuring from the Ottoman reform period onwards and also on the many expectations and hopes for the future that existed during those decades. We will be particularly attentive to patterns of coexistence and conflict between communities and to the way those were structured by political and economic transformations, both in rural and urban settings. |
| Learning objectives | Upon completion of this course, you will - have gained knowledge about the social history of Late Modern Palestine; - be able to identify and recall key events and understand their larger social and political context; - be able to analyze and critically reflect upon original sources (in English); - know different analytical frameworks and approaches used in the historiography of Late Modern Palestine. |

| Comments | This course is mostly intended for MA students, but BA students in their last year can also register. The maximum number of students admitted is 30, with priority given to those from Near and Middle Eastern Studies, Jewish Studies and Changing Societies. The class runs from 14:15 until 17:00. | Admission requirements | Before the first class, please read pp. 53-89 (German version), or pp. 37-70 (English version) of Gudrun Krämer, Geschichte Palästinas, as well as Doumani 1992. All readings are on ADAM. |
