Semester spring semester 2012
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Stefan Willitsch (stefan.willitsch@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content - Theory and technology of lasers (basic concepts of laser operation, examples of laser sources, laser resonators, wavelength selection, pulsed lasers)
- Molecular structure and dynamics: advanced concepts (Born-Oppenheimer approximation, potential energy surfaces, nuclear motion: vibration and rotation of molecules, angular momentum and detailed energy level structure of molecules)
- Molecular spectroscopy (theory of the interaction of matter with radiation, laser spectroscopy: high-sensitivity and high-resolution methods, quantitative spectroscopy)
- Chemical reaction dynamics (classical and quantum theory of chemical reactions, experimental methods: molecular beams, laser chemistry, 3D imaging of reactions, real-time studies of chemical processes, femtochemistry)
-Ultracold atoms, molecules and ions (laser cooling and trapping of atoms and ions, generation of cold molecules, applications: single-molecule chemistry, cold chemistry, precision spectroscopy)
Learning objectives Introduction to modern experimental methods and current research topics in physical chemistry: theory and applications of lasers, laser spectroscopy and chemistry, chemical reaction dynamics, real-time studies and control of chemical processes at the molecular level, generation and applications of ultracold atoms and molecules.
