Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | In this course we will explore various kinds of writing in English by authors who have migrated to Britain or other parts of the 'Commonwealth', or who are first generation Britons, or who live in a former British colony. Our reading will take us beyond Britain to India, Sri Lanka, Canada and many other places, and as far back in time as the Roman Empire. We will relate our texts to the discourses of postcolonial theory and find out about their political and cultural contexts. |
Learning objectives | Students will develop their competence in reading English fiction from various cultural contexts, relate this to postcolonial theory and find out more about the cultural uses of fiction. |
