30539-01 - Lecture: Telecinematic discourse (2 CP)

Semester spring semester 2012
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course we focus on the English language by looking at movies and tv series/shows. We will discuss the nature of data taken from fictional sources and develop a set of linguistic tools derived from discourse analysis, stylistics and sociolinguistics to approach the study of language choice in this medium. The prime focus is thus on how to study language in a particular context and to reflect on dramaturgical choices. The questions raised range from how characters are stylized through the use of language, how contrasts are created within a movie by means of language, how this reflects language ideologies and stereotypes, and how we can discuss language in the movies as a discursive social action.
Learning objectives Students should become aware of the nature of data taken from movies/tv series and learn how to adopt and adapt tools from discourse analysis, stylistics and sociolinguistics for research.
Bibliography A selection of texts and handouts will be made available online in OLAT.
