19029-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Basic Course in EU Law (4 CP)

Semester fall semester 2012
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Christa Tobler (christa.tobler@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course considers the constitutional and institutional aspects of the European Union (EU). In its most famous judgment, Van Gend en Loos of 1963, the European Court of Justice stated that "the Community constitutes a new legal order of International Law". What made the then European Economic Community (and now the EU) so special? How did the original three Communities develop into the larger EU? How does the EU work from a legal point of view? The course deals with the following issues: development and structure of the EU, constitutional aspects, primacy and direct effect of EU law, institutions of the EU, the making of secondary legislation and the Court's important role in developing EU law.
Learning objectives Verständnis der rechtlichen Grundlagen der EU.
