Content | Today English is the world language par excellence. But what was English like 1000 years ago? Which are the roots of English? How has its grammar changed? Why and in what ways has its vocabulary expanded through the past centuries? What were the characteristics of Old and Middle English? Why is the spelling of Present-day English so strange? Why are there so many different varieties of English? Which are the factors that have made it possible for English to turn from a fringe language into a global lingua franca? These and many more questions will be addressed in the course. It is strongly recommended that BA students who take the proseminar on historical linguistics also follow this lecture. In addition, every advanced student of English who has not taken this lecture yet is strongly urged to take this core course. |
