| Content | The theme of this contemporary debate revolves around ethical challenges raised by cutting edge biotechnology, in particular synthetic biology and medical applications of nanotechnology. Both these disciplines have tremendous potential to improve health and wellbeing of populations, make diagnostic tests more accurate and affordable and facilitated targeted drug delivery to diseased organs. But they also raise a number of ethical challenges like access to and just distribution of technology, the impact the technology might have on the society and how policy makes need to foresee the challenges in order to have better policies to regulate the new technology without compromising the scientific progress. In these seminars, we aim at describing larger issues surrounding emerging technologies and generate insights on synthetic biology and nanotechnology in particular from not only Switzerland but also from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and the UK. |
