| Content | Voltaire (1694-1778) est sans doute l’écrivain français dont le nom reste le plus associé aux Lumières. Il se fit, de fait, l’avocat de l’éducation, de la liberté et de la tolérance, tout en employant la littérature comme une arme critique et politique, portant à leur sommet l’ironie et l’insolence. Mais nous ne lisons plus qu’une partie de son œuvre : ses "Contes", qu’il jugeait mineurs, sont devenus ses textes les plus célèbres, alors que son théâtre, qu’il tenait, comme ses contemporains avec lui, pour son chef-d’œuvre, n’est quasiment plus lu, encore moins joué. Ce cours proposera donc de se plonger dans la diversité de son écriture, et par là, dans la complexité des Lumières elles-mêmes, en explorant des textes de genres divers – récit, théâtre, essais, mais aussi correspondance et poésie. |
