Content | In this seminar we will focus on present-day English. In particular, our interest does not lie on the inner circle varieties of English, but on the outer and expanding circle varieties (cf. Kachru's model). We will ask questions such as: What is Global English / International English / World English / English as a Lingua Franca (ELF)? What happens when English is used as a proper 'lingua franca', i.e. when there are no native speakers involved in the interaction? In other words, what do non-native speakers 'do' to the English language? Is there evidence for the emergence of a new 'global' variety of English, for a Euro-English or for maybe a Swiss English? What is the future of English more generally? In addition to discussing literature that tackles these questions, we will also specifically examine the methods that are appropriate for studying the questions raised. |
Learning objectives | Students should be able to discuss the questions raised below from the perspective of a linguist. |
Bibliography | Students are expected to be familiar with the book by Jennifer Jenkins (2009, "World Englishes. A Resource Book for Students". Second edition. London: Routledge). In the course, we will mainly work with texts from linguistics journals, that will be made available at the beginning of the course. |
