36505-01 - Seminar: Language and Sensory Perception (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2014
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Catherine Diederich (catherine.diederich@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The aim of this BA seminar is to examine the relationship between language, cognition, and sensory perception, thereby gaining a better understanding of how language serves as an accessible representation to examine how different cultures sense their environment. We will discuss early research on linguistic realizations of sensory experience such as the work on color perception, as well as more recent typological studies on how languages vary in their encodings of percepts. Particular attention will be given to the methodological approaches to capture the interrelation between language and the senses.
Learning objectives To introduce students to research at the interface between language and sensory perception; to understand different research perspectives to how various languages encode sensory perception: to become familiar with universalist and relativist approaches to study linguistic representations of percepts.
Bibliography All texts will be made available on ISIS. Further readings will be made available at the seminar’s library.
