Content | Current Topics in Animal Ethics: The moral status of non-human animals has troubled thinkers since the very beginning of philosophy, but questions in animal ethics remain highly controversial today. The current practice of factory farming gives reasons to question our consumer behaviour and is receiving increasing media attention. However, there are numerous additional fields of human-animal interaction that need to be discussed from an ethical point of view: new technologies, for example, may overcome the necessity of (certain) animal experiments or the use of non-human animals for food purposes (artificial meat), but they also open doors to futuristic procedures like human-animal chimaeras and “optimised” farm animals (blind chickens, or even chickens that cannot feel pain). This course will explore topics such as: animal ethics and new technologies; the relationship between environmental and animal ethics; speciesism and ethical veganism; what animal ethics can learn from (neuro or behavioural) sciences; the ambivalence in human-animal-relationships; feminist perspectives on animal ethics; non-human animals and the law; and what we owe to free-living non-human animals. |
