Semester | spring semester 2015 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Regula Hohl Trillini (r.hohl@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | Students interested in Shakespeare reception history, intertextuality studies and adaptation/quotation (from a literary or linguistic angle), will be introduced to "HyperHamlet", an annotated collection of more than 10'000 quotations from "Hamlet" (accessible at www.hyperhamlet.unibas.ch). Using this active electronic research medium with an interdisciplinary background provides first-hand experience of research in progress. After introductory readings from the relevant fields and an introduction to the database and its rationales, students will generate, upload and edit their own sample data sets and present the results. Ideally, these mini-projects will be springboards for more extended personal research (seminar papers, MA theses). The database and its search facilities accommodate a fascinating range of genres, periods and even languages. To date, published research and student papers related to the database includes, for example, work on 18th-century parodies of 'To be or not to be' or "Hamlet" quotations in crime fiction, "Shakespeare in Love", in Gothic novels, in Tennyson or in the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" (cf. the link "Publications" on "HyperHamlet"). |
Learning objectives | At the end of this course, students should be familiar with basic issues in intertextuality studies, particularly quotation, an outline of the history of Shakespeare reception as well as literary and linguistic computing. They will have learnt about and practiced pertinent research methods (fulltext searches, categories for corpus annotation, online editing) and should be able to develop strategies for using the data in preparation for their own projects. |
Bibliography | A print copy of "Hamlet" (any edition). Please re-read the play in preparation. Further materials will be made available on ADAM / wuala cloud storage. |
Comments | You will need to bring your laptop to most meetings for online work. |
