39557-01 - Colloquium: Advanced Research Methods (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2015
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Conny Wunsch (conny.wunsch@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The first part of the course will introduce students to the fundamentals of program evaluation and provide an abridged overview of key issues and methods. It focuses on parametric methods, in particular on OLS and parametric instrumental variables. The assumption is that students have previously studied least squares regression, although the course will begin with a very quick overview of key results. The following topics will be covered:

1. Least squares fundamentals
2. The evaluation problem, the selection problem, and treatment parameters
3. Social experiments
4. Instrumental variables

The second part of the course covers semi-paramteric and non-parametric approaches to program evaluation. The following topics will be covered:

1. Non-parametric identification
2. Selection on observables and matching
3. Instrumental variables
4. Regression discontinuity design
5. Differences-in-differences
6. Dynamic treatment evaluation
Learning objectives Knowledge and understanding of the main state-of-the-art empirical research methods.
Bibliography A reading list is available on ADAM.
