Content This seminar will be based on research at ETH that covers various topics of Human-Computer Interaction and ranges from the usability of financial trading systems to navigation in real and virtual environments, flexibility of spatial representations and usability of mobile wayfinding assistance. One focus will be on visual attention allocation assessment in the context of complex environments. This is further linked to individual differences in problem solving and decision making in complex environments, as well as task properties and cognitive load as a factor for performance decrements.
Background: Cognitive science strives to untangle the mental processes and structures underlying cognitive phenomena such as perception, learning, memory and reasoning. Cognitive Science views human cognition as information processing and provides an inter-disciplinary integration of approaches from cognitive psychology, informatics (e.g., artificial intelligence), neuroscience and anthropology. The ETH Cognitive Science group embraces the inter-disciplinary nature of Cognitive Science by reaching out to research and application partners in Architecture, Design, Computing and Neuroscience. The focus is on investigating human interaction with technical systems as well as spatial environments. See also: cog.ethz.ch
