36119-01 - Lecture: Nanoscience Media Competence (2 CP)

Semester spring semester 2016
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Ralf Stutzki (ralf.stutzki@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Good science needs good communication: rhetoric and media competence in
Nanoscience

Bridging the communication divide between (nano-) science and the public is a pivotal yet
highly underestimated scientific community task. A researcher ought to be able to
communicate successfully about his/her own scientific findings both to his/her peers as
well as to the broad non-scientific public. Rhetorical skills and media competence thus
should be trained - they are indispensable parts of any good academic communication.
Learning objectives This course will
i. expose students to the evolving (national and international) media systems
ii. address - in depth - issues of sound journalistic practice and media ethics
iii. enhance students‘ rhetorical skills in order to prepare them for
- future poster and paper presentations at scientific conferences
- media inquiries and interviews
iv. train students to translate complex scientific issues into publishable media language
(e.g. writing press releases).
v. offer the unique opportunity to participate in a broadcast production about Nanoscience.
Students will produce a radio program focusing on their research interests.
