Content | In this seminar, we will study the definition and evolution of the concept of Englishness with a focus on the importance of landscape in discourses of collective identity and cultural memory. We will read domestic travel accounts from the interwar period and a 'biography' of the land of Britain as well as two novels from the early 20th and 21st centuries, which have made crucial contributions to the debates about Englishness. |
Learning objectives | Students will improve their skill in critical analysis, reading fictional and non-fictional texts with a view to an exploration of important cultural concepts. Seminar discussions will provide the basis and frame for independent research. |
