Lecturers | Andrew Shields (andrew.shields@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | "Moonlight", by Barry Jenkins, won the Academy Award for Best Picture for 2016. But this course was planned even before the ceremony drew worldwide attention and mockery for the confusion surrounding the Best Picture announcement. Recent films by African-American directors address themes of race, of course, but also of gender, sexuality, class, and violence. We will begin with a film that is already almost 30 years old ("Do the Right Thing") before turning to a number of recent releases. |
Learning objectives | In-depth study of the films and their reception. |
Bibliography | As of May 2017, I plan to address the following movies in the course (subject to availability): - "Do the Right Thing", directed by Spike Lee, 1989 - "I Will Follow", directed by Ava DuVernay, 2010 - "Fruitvale Station", directed by Ryan Coogler, 2013 - "Dear White People", directed by Justin Simien, 2014 - "Moonlight", directed by Barry Jenkins, 2016 Selected secondary literature will be provided by the instructor. |
