Content | This study trip explores the intersections of architecture, urbanism, and modernity through the case of Casablanca. We will explore the city’s modern architecture and urbanism in the context of historical developments including imperialism, world war, the Cold War, decolonization, and developmentalism. Students will pursue bibliographic research on a given site (project or neighborhood) in advance of the class. They will subsequently present this material in the form of a guided tour through their particular site. In addition, we will also meet with local experts. Our goal is to study the legacies of architectural modernity in the city’s everyday lived experience through first-hand observation, historical research, and formal analysis. |
Learning objectives | This study trip equips students with concrete urban and historical research techniques through careful observation and documentation. It teaches students to interrogate how buildings, landscapes, and cities are in the process of being continuously made and unmade by historical change and complex human and material agency. |
