Semester | fall semester 2018 |
Course frequency | Once only |
Lecturers | Christiane Schlote (christiane.schlote@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | In her study 'Theatre and War: Theatrical Responses Since 1991' (2012), Jeanne Colleran argues "for the particular power of theatre as a live, embodied, communal art form to raise awareness of complex issues flattened out through hype and spin, to offer a public space of exchange, and to invigorate political analyses and action". In this proseminar, we will test this claim and examine how contemporary British playwrights have addressed and dramatised the relationship between theatre, war and violence - from the Rwandan Civil War and the Iraq War to armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In our discussions, we will particularly focus on questions of theatre and human rights, spectatorship, gendered violence and the representation of war correspondents and humanitarian aid workers, but also on issues of performance in places of war. |
Learning objectives | Students will be introduced to key critical and methodological approaches to drama and explore the challenges and limits of dramatic representations of war and violence. |
Bibliography | Primary and theoretical texts will be made available on ADAM. |
