| Content | This is designed as a follow-up to Prof. Ina Habermann's survey lecture "Renaissance to Restoration" but can be profitable also without this background. Students will read, discuss and read aloud from a selection of plays by William Shakespeare and his contemporaries. |

| Bibliography | Every meeting will be dedicated to one or two plays. Participants are required to use and bring along print versions of all texts on the reading list. This will probably include an edition of Shakespeare's complete works. Any edition is acceptable; the following editions are recommended: - "The Norton Shakespeare" (complete works) edited by Stephen Greenblatt for its excellent introductions to the individual plays. - "Four Revenge Tragedies". A Mermaid anthology containing "The Spanish Tragedy", "'Tis Pity She's A Whore" and "The White Devil" (ISBN 978-1-4081-5960-6) - "Marlowe: Four Plays". A Mermaid anthology containing "Tamburlaine" and "Edward II" (ISBN 978-1-4081-4949-2) - For fans: "The Norton Anthology of English Renaissance Drama". An expensive doorstopper, which contains every early modern non-Shakespeare play which you will ever want to read. Four of the plays on the reading list will be made available as a reader (print on demand from the HiWis) because there is no ideal print edition: Elizabeth Cary's "Tragedy of Mariam", Middleton's "The Roaring Girl", Ben Jonson's "The Alchemist" and Mary Sidney's "Antonius". | Comments | Three meetings will take the form of early-evening film viewings to bring some "performance" experience to this reading course. |

| Admission requirements | Open to everybody who is ready to take on the considerable reading load. Hörer only if the maximal number of participants (15) is not reached with fully enrolled students. |
