Catherine Housecroft (catherine.housecroft@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Thomas R. Ward (thomas.ward@unibas.ch) |
Content | Chemistry of main group elements (groups 1,2,13,14,15,16,17,18). Introduction to symmetry, point groups and group theory and its applications in chemistry. |
Learning objectives | An understanding of the trends in chemical reactivity of the main group elements; use of thermodynamics in inorganic chemistry; a knowledge of the descriptive chemistry of the main group elements; trends in oxidation states across the periodic table and down groups; an appreciation of molecular symmetry and an ability to work out the point group of simple molecules. An introduction to group theory and applications to inorganic complexes with high symmetry. |
