Content This research seminar, co-taught by Barbara Schellewald, art history, and Ina Habermann, literature, will focus on a fascinating and trailblazing woman, Gertrude Bell, who transcended late Victorian gender norms to lead an amazing life as explorer and traveler in the Middle East, alpinist, archaeologist, secret agent, political advisor, writer and photographer. We will study Bell’s extraordinary life and explore, through her writings and photographs, her political activities as well as her cultural and archaeological work. One key aspect will be Bell's discoveries in Syria. Discussions can be held in both German and English.
