Content | Methods for analyzing large volumes of data (so-called “Big Data”) and for linking existing data collections are becoming increasingly popular in a large variety of scientific disciplines. In addition to a strong research focus on the improvement of existing and the development of new methods as well as their tailored application to concrete problems, also a critical discussion on the ethical, legal, and societal implications of the application of these methods is essential. This summer school will provide insights from different disciplines onto the field of Data Analytics: • Ethical aspects such as data protection, data privacy • Legal aspects such as data ownership, personal rights, liability • Societal aspects such as acceptance of methods, chances and risks, communication to the general public The summer school will combine talks from experts in the different fields and activities of the participants (case studies, projects). |
Learning objectives | The participants will be able to assess the ethical, legal, and societal aspects of Big Data and Data Analytics and will become familiar with the most relevant constraints and best practices in these domains. They will be prepared to participate in a more general discussion on the consequences of Big Data and Data Analytics on society, beyond mere technical aspects. |
