| Content | In his study "Acoustic Territories", the artist and theorist Brandon LaBelle argues that home "weaves together the idea of place with belonging: to return home is to retrieve the locus of one's first experiences", whereas "mobility, transience, and homelessness become signs of transgression against the stability of the ordered home". It is precisely these "signs of transgressions" that we will take up in this course and examine how not only contested, but also culturally specific concepts of 'home' have been inscribed in contemporary global literature and drama, ranging from British council-estate fiction to works emphasising the importance of class and gender relations in literary constructions of domestic spaces. |
| Learning objectives | This seminar will provide students with an understanding of key theories of the concept of home and people-place relationships. |
| Bibliography | Students should acquire the following texts: Barbara Kingsolver, "Unsheltered" (Harper, 2018) and Meera Syal, "Anita and Me" (Flamingo, 1997). Copies of Kingsolver and Syal will be available at the 'Labyrinth' bookstore, Nadelberg 17, Basel. Theoretical and additional primary texts will be made available on ADAM. |
