Semester | spring semester 2021 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | English is not only spoken in Britain, the United States, Canada, New Zealand or Australia. Classifying the 'Englishes' of the world, Kachru (1992) speaks of three 'circles': the 'Inner Circle', comprising the varieties just mentioned, the 'Outer Circle' (Bangladesh, Ghana, India, ...) and the 'Expanding Circle' (China, Egypt, Indonesia, ...). In this seminar, we will look at the types of English that exist, at questions of standard language ideology, the internationalization of English, the role of English in Asia and Europe and the future of Global Englishes. |
Learning objectives | Introduction to other varieties of English than the core national ones; raising awareness for English as an International language; introduction to key topics in the study of Global Englishes. |
Bibliography | Please purchase the following course book: Jenkins, Jennifer. 2015. "Global Englishes. A Resource Book for Students". Third Edition. London: Routledge. |
Comments | Return to face-to-face teaching: Hybrid attendance is possible in case of quarantine and for students at risk. |

Course application | In order to ensure a good learning environment, we aim at no more than 20 students per class. We ask you to register via the following doodle link: https://doodle.com/poll/fxdmhnmwfipuwppm?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link (4 classes). Please only register for a maximum of TWO seminars and only for more than one if you really intend to take the course. Should you have not made it into one of the courses and you are only able to register for the waiting lists, we guarantee that we will take you in the course with the least student numbers. The doodle will open on January 4, 2021, 10am (CET) and close on February 25, 2021, midnight (CET) in order to finalize student distribution in the week before term starts. |
