62332-01 - Lecture: Pragmatics of fiction: English in written and telecinematic texts (2 CP)

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course we will focus on the pragmatics of fiction and explore to what extent fictional data can enrich pragmatic theorizing and to what extent pragmatic theories can be useful for studying fictional data. By working on key concepts in pragmatics such as participation structure, genre/frame, identity construction and characterization, we will first explore the challenges of such concepts and then illustrate them with fictional data.
Learning objectives At the end of this course, students
- know about the nature of fictional data from a pragmatic perspective
- can explore novel ways of engaging with fictional artefacts in light of changing participation structures
- can explain how linguistic indexes and multimodality can result in the creation of fictional characters in light of identity construction theories
- know how societal ideologies such as im/politeness norms can enter fictional texts and contribute to cultural transmission and discursive negotiation of norms
