62212-01 - Seminar: English narratives online and offline (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Narratives are all pervasive in human interaction and fulfil both a cognitive and a social need in communication. Telling a story can have many different functions and be realized in many different ways and with different levels of skill. After having established the classic terminology in describing narratives in face-to-face interaction (as developed by Labov for English data), this course also works with recent theoretical insights as reported in literature on narratives in computer-mediated contexts (vlogs, twitter, status updates, online diaries, advice forums, etc). We will explore small stories and tiny stories and compare this to more elaborated acts of narrating in computer-mediated contexts and oral face-to-face narratives.
Learning objectives At the end of this course students
- can explain the interactional co-constructed achievement of a story-telling event
- have gained experience in applying theoretical concepts to their own data
- can develop new research questions of their own
