Content | The numerous plays written or adapted by the British playwright and screenwriter Tanika Gupta are not only marked by a broad range of innovative subjects, from institutional racism, multicultural youth cultures and Bengali revolutionaries to neo-colonial tourism, national identities and gender politics in a mujra club in London's East End, but her theatre also "uses new gestures that go well beyond the traditional ones of British theatre" and thereby "challenges audiences to see behind the story and to think about the political choices being posited on stage" which "is what great theatre is all about" (Sierz 2012). In this seminar, we will discuss Gupta's varied and prolific work for the theatre, also within the context of a whistle-stop tour of the major British theatres her plays have been staged in. |
Learning objectives | This seminar will introduce students to the multi-genre work of Tanika Gupta and to key critical and methodological approaches to contemporary drama |
Bibliography | Primary and theoretical texts will be made available on ADAM. |
