Learning objectives | Students develop the following competencies: (i) They know about first and second language acquisition theories and their implication on language learning methodology. (ii) They understand in what ways learning a first language is different from learning a second language later in life. (iii) They are familiar with the approaches in SLA which have been influenced by linguistic theories (contrastive analysis, error analysis, universal grammar, functional approaches). (iv) They are familiar with approaches in SLA which have been influenced by the field of psychology (language and the brain, learning processes, individual differences in second language learning). (v) They understand the importance of the social and cultural context in language learning. (vi) They are familiar with the differences between natural and instructional settings in SLA. (vii) They understand the six proposals for the classroom as discussed in Lightbown & Spada (2013), what assumptions they are based on, what common classroom practices derived from them and what research found out about their effectiveness. |
