Content | This course introduces students hands-on in a key activity of the academic trade, i.e. organizing a conference. Students participating in this course will develop, plan and ultimately run the 2nd European Conference on African Stuides scheduled for 23-25 June 2022. In the framework of this course they will receive an introduction on how a conference functions and the essentials of conference planning but will then work on their own with coaching from members of faculty in African Studies. At the core of this conference project is a deep and intense learning experience based on total immersion in a challenging enterprise – the conceptualization and planning of an academic conference including all elements and aspects of such an endeavor from A to Z: • Building a team with different bodies (organizing committee, program committee, support staff) assisted by an advisory board • Identifying a theme and/or core issues to be discussed • Phrasing a call document • Assembling the program committee and defining selection criteria • Raising funds • Communication, advertising and media relations • Organizing the program, venue and side-activities • Serving as host, panel chair, discussant, moderator, facilitator • Reporting and evaluating |
