| Content | Students interested in intertextuality studies and/or in database work in literary studies and linguistics will be introduced to three databases which document quotations around the drama of Shakespeare’s time. - HyperHamlet contains over 11’000 Hamlet quotations from 1600 to Twitter - DEx documents manuscript albums of early fans of 17th-century theatre - WordWeb-IDEM show how dramatists in Shakespeare’s time quoted each other The use of these three active electronic resources guarantees first-hand experience of research in progress and in-depth thinking about intertextual references in general. There is a focus on Shakespeare and his contemporaries but between them, the databases and their search facilities contain a fascinating range of genres, and languages up to the present day which accommodate widely varied research interests. After introductory readings from the relevant fields and an introduction to the databases, their rationales and contents, students will generate, upload and edit their own sample data sets and present the results. Ideally, these mini-projects will be springboards for more extended personal research (seminar papers, MA theses). Guest teachers will include Dr. Beatrice Montedoro (Zurich), the co-editor of Dramatic Extracts and Prof. Lena Steveker (Luxembourg), who is working on pamphlets from the English Civil War (1642-1651) which contain quotations from drama in a time when all theatres were closed. |
| Learning objectives | The course will familiarize students with basic issues in intertextuality studies, particularly quotation, an outline of the history of Shakespeare reception and the London theatrical scene of his time. Participants will work with and contribute to three open-access databases and in so doing practice relevant research methods such as fulltext searches, the use of secondary literature, categories for corpus annotation and online editing. |
