Content | The development and usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is ever increasing across medical contexts and presents a new frontier across interdisciplinary domains such as medicine, engineering, philosophy and ethics. In particular, the ability to understand the often overlooked narratives of fairness or critically think about the impact of AI in historically marginalized populations is a challenge to implement AI in healthcare safely. In this course, we examine the ethical challenges that arise from AI while focusing on diversifying the narratives about those challenges. In that sense, drawing on the knowledge of invited experts who have different viewpoints and experiences, we introduce challenges from a different perspective than the one that are taken for granted or accepted as natural (or that you might know already). Among others, we will discuss the role of women in AI, the specific AI challenges related to the aging populations and the importance of bringing additional values such as empathy to AI. In each session, an invited scholar will give a presentation on a pertinent topic, allowing us to approach the multifaceted complexity of medical AI from diverse angles. To accommodate for the ongoing difficulty of international travel, the course will take place in a hybrid format and can also be followed completely online. |
Learning objectives | This course will stimulate critical thinking about technology, narrative and concept - helping students to identify challenges and opportunities of AI that are not often discuss and provide alternatives that move us toward a more just, fair and safe usage of AI. |
