Content | Sustainability science is expected to study options for desirable societal futures. Among others, it looks at possible future outcomes and developments given today's options for action by means of scenario building and by taking into account the complex interactions between ecological, economic and societal factors. This seminar will develop scenarios for future mobilities in Switzerland. “Mobility” is thereby understood in the tradition of Sheller & Urry 2006, which goes beyond transportation e.g. by understanding tele-conferences as a mobility type. Importantly, the scenarios are expected to display the co-evolution between the broader societal system and the mobility system. In order to satisfy that expectation, the seminar will build on former work on energy futures of Switzerland (Burger, Emmenegger, Sohre, under review). The member of the seminar will get acquainted to the method of Formative Scenario Analysis that allows integrating different disciplinary knowledge basis by means of system analysis and consistency analysis of possible future manifestations. They also learn to use two related IT-tools supporting the scenario building. Content-wise, the seminar will be supported by literature studies carried out in the MSD project course “Training in Sustainability Research” and Research Lab for students of the Master in Changing Societies. Students of each program are encouraged to take the Project Course (MSD, JIDSD) or Research Lab (MChS) during the same semester, but it’s not a requirement. |
Learning objectives | Students - can carry out a "Formative Scenario Analysis"; - know relevant ecological, economic and societal factors of the mobility system in Switzerland; - develop a set of low-carbon mobility scenarios for Switzerland 2050. |
