Content | This seminar is a survey of individual learner differences (IDs) and how they influence second language acquisition. It aims to equip students with the tools to understand the key principles and practices in SLA concerning the role of IDs, taking a dynamic systems (DST) perspective to examine IDs. Some of the variables/topics to be discussed in this seminar are motivation, affect, language aptitude, multilingualism, tolerance of ambiguity, and willingness to communicate. By the end of this seminar, you will develop an understanding of these ID variables and how they interact with language development in complex dynamic ways. Students will also be given a chance to analyze L2 performance data in light of some ID variables. |
Learning objectives | • You will know and discuss the fundamental concepts as to IDs in SLA. • You will be able to identify the role of these concepts in L2 development. • You will be familiar with the relevant research strand in SLA. • You will be able to synthesize SLA theory and ID research in a written assignment. • You will be able to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze some ID variables and how they relate to language development. |
