Course frequency | Once only |
Lecturers | Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | Jan Kott’s influential book "Shakespeare Our Contemporary", which appeared in English translation in 1964 (the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth) and had a great impact on critics and practitioners of the theatre, made Shakespeare political. In this seminar we will trace the debate around Shakespeare’s contemporaneity and the political impact of his plays. We will look at appropriations, adaptations and ‘translocations’ in order to assess how readers and critics as well as theatre and film practitioners have made Shakespeare matter in our lives. |
Learning objectives | Students will expand their knowledge of Shakespearean drama. They will engage in close readings and get immersed in classic Shakespeare criticism and Shakespeare adaptation as well as contemporary critical debates. Readings and seminar discussions will provide the basis and frame for independent further research. |
Bibliography | Texts (to be purchased): William Shakespeare, "Julius Caesar" W.S., "Hamlet" W.S., "The Merchant of Venice" W.S., "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" Please buy the most recent Arden editions (third series) of the plays. Further material will be available on the ADAM server. |
