Content | A significant demographic change currently experienced by Europe in general and Switzerland in particular concerns natality and human reproduction. Birth rates have been decreasing and there is a trend to postpone parenthood or forego it altogether. This is the result of socio-cultural changes and also medical advances (e.g. development of contraceptives), which have turned reproduction and its timing into a matter of choice. Moreover, the development of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) has made it possible to conceive also for infertile individuals through, amongst other things, gamete donation and surrogate motherhood. This has sparked ethical and societal debates on the role of the law, medical professionals and aspiring parents with respect to reproduction. This course will explore these issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. There will be national and international guest-speakers discussing human reproduction and ART, and a specific focus on the ethical issues raised by the trend of postponing parenthood to an advanced age. Preparatory reading material and a detailed program will be provided to students. |
Learning objectives | Students will be able to understand why human reproduction raises ethical questions; they will be able to identify the role that medicine plays in this field through ART; and they will have an overview of the societal debates around reproductive issues (e.g. access to ART at an advanced age, medical tourism etc.). For the course assignment, students will write an essay on the topic of reproductive ethics of 2’000 to 2’500 words. Students will receive a more detailed description of the course assessment before the start of the course. |
